The Primary Mental Health Program (PMHP) is a program for early detection and prevention of school adjustment problems in primary grade children. PMHP seeks to help young children, kindergarten through grade three, to make a positive adjustment to the school experience, both educationally and socially. This goal is accomplished through the combined efforts of members of a school-based team, which includes teachers, administrators, mental health professionals, parents, and counselor assistants. Since its inception in a single Rochester, New York elementary school in 1957, this program has grown considerably. CT’s State Department of Education (SDE) has provided funding for PMHP since the 1983-1984 school year to various districts across the state via a grant process. SERC holds the contract with the SDE to assist in the provision of training/technical assistance for the school-based teams involved in this program. Program sessions are designed to address the needs and issues of counselor assistants from participating districts.
