Today, teachers of science are challenged with differentiating instruction in mixed-ability classrooms while struggling to prepare students for district and state assessments. Teachers need practical strategies to acquire and strengthen the skills necessary to meet these demands, in addition to making the study of science meaningful for all students. The Science Literacy Initiative is premised on the findings of the following: the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS, 1999), Project 2061 Benchmarks for Science Literacy, the National Science Education Standards, and the CT Core Science Curriculum Framework (2004).
