School Vision Screening

An Online Course for School Nurses

Session: 13-23-069

Connecticut school nurses can self-pace their learning of essential content about vision and school vision screenings by participating in this online course. This tutorial is available throughout the entire year and can be accessed by individuals or groups of school nurses.

Two course modules address the rationale for school vision screenings, describe students and staff that should be involved in the screening process, and review vision anatomy and physiology, as well as common pediatric vision problems. Participants will also learn how to set up, implement, and evaluate a vision screening program in their school. Supplemental learning resources appropriate for students and families can also be referenced.

Learning is assessed at the conclusion of the course in the form of self-correcting questions. School nurses demonstrating vision screening competencies through a practicum involving supervised screening of distance vision will receive CEUs as well as a Vision Screening Training Certificate.

Upon completion of this online course, school nurses, providing health care and education to students in PreK-grade 12, will:

  • describe the anatomical and physiological bases for vision to distinguish between typical and atypical development
  • discuss common eye problems: symptoms, treatment, and complications
  • describe the purposes and procedures of various recommended vision screening tests
  • use the materials in this course and the Guidelines for Health Screenings in Connecticut Schools (2004) to develop and implement a comprehensive vision screening program
  • modify vision screening procedures for students with special or unique needs and those in early childhood programs

The registration process for this online course is ongoing. School nurses may register by mail at any point in the school year or during the summer that meets their personal needs. Once registration has been confirmed, participants will be able to access the vision screening modules online and pace their learning in a manner that fits their individual needs. There is also no set time limit for beginning and ending the course, although completion within a six to eight week time frame is recommended for continuity of learning.
