Literacy Initiative
The
Literacy Initiative joins the Connecticut State Department of Education
in the commitment to a balanced approach to literacy instruction in
order for all students, including students with disabilities and students
at-risk, to develop the proficiency, confidence, and fluency in reading,
writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and thinking needed to meet
the literacy demands of the 21st century.
This commitment is realized through continuous collaborative efforts
with State Department of Education consultants from the Bureaus
of Program and Teacher Evaluation; School, Family, and Community
Partnerships; Early Childhood Education and Social Services; and
Special Education and Pupil Services, endeavoring to plan a statewide,
comprehensive approach to professional development with regard to
literacy.
PROMPTS TO SUPPORT EARLY LITERACY
Marie Clay's Reading Recovery prompts
(1993) are the basis for the following heirarchy of prompts compiled
by a group of Reading Recovery trained teachers. The higher the
prompt, the less information the teacher provides to the student
(minimal scaffolding); the lower the prompt, the more information
the teacher provides to the student (maximum scaffolding).
