Families as Partners

families as partnersThe goal of the Families as Partners Initiative is to provide resources, education, and support to parents, guardians, foster parents, adult family members, school personnel, as well as statewide and community groups as they form partnerships to promote educational success for all children.

In 1994, these services to family members were incorporated under the umbrella of the Families as Partners Initiative. Two critical realities were responsible for this development: 1) general education classrooms began to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population; and 2) over two decades of research demonstrated that family involvement was a critical component in the educational success of all students. These realities confirmed that activities aimed at all families needed to be added to the traditional SERC offerings. The Families as Partners Initiative represents the merging of disability-related activities with presentations of a wider scope that can engage and inform ALL families.
