Literacy Initiative

What is literacy? Here are several definitions:


Just as there is more than one definition of literacy, there is more than one way to become literate. The goal of SERC’s literacy initiative is to provide information, resources, and support for:

  • identifying and implementing the most effective ways to help people read and write, and
  • helping people to use their knowledge of reading and writing for fun and pleasure, full participation in society, and as a tool for empowerment.

SERC’s literacy initiative puts the SERC Vision of Equity, Excellence, and Education into practice by focusing on all students while considering the unique strengths and needs of students of color, students learning English, and students who are struggling or have disabilities.


SERC’s literacy initiative provides professional development to educators and community members. We cover all aspects of literacy including, but not limited to:

  • increasing student achievement in literacy
  • strategies and interventions for reading and writing
  • literacy instruction for English learners
  • reading and writing workshop
  • curriculum development
  • literacy strategies for paraeducators
  • fostering engagement and motivation in literacy
  • Connecticut Core Standards/Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts
  • facilitation of professional learning communities and data teams
  • culturally responsive instruction
  • aligning teacher belief to instructional practice to student achievement
