Since 2003, SERC has worked to shed light on race and racism in education, studying the intersection of race and culture with educational achievement, special education, and student outcomes and success. SERC staff members have explored institutionalized racism and how the maintenance and perpetuation of differential distributions of power and privilege in schools result in significant disparities in educational outcomes between students of color and their White peers.

SERC Foundation Kicks Off First Year by 'Dismantling Systemic Racism'

"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." James Baldwin

More than 300 people gathered in New Haven to face the education community's most intractable challenge: the racism that permeates our society and our schools continues to drive opportunity gaps in education.

The May 2016 event was "Dismantling Systemic Racism: 2016 Conference on Race, Education & Success," a collaboration of SERC and the SERC Foundation. It was the first event for the foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2015 to support the programs, services, mission, and vision of SERC.

Conference sponsors included the Anti-Defamation League, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, CT Parent Power, and the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund.
